Soon after I'd had the concept of developing and making a range of coconut tea, I began to think of a name and a logo.
Most major brands have a unique name or logo. For instance, there's only one 'Coca-Cola', there's only one 'Twitter' - there's no other name that sounds anything like it; resulting in brand strength. Similarly, I wanted a word that hasn't ever been used, but still tells the consumer exactly what they're buying.
My first idea was 'Coconutea' (Phonetically: Coconutty) - it does exactly what it says on the tin... But wasn't quite unique enough for me.
So I began to play around with words that are associated with drinking tea; the word Cuppa came straight to mind... We all love a Cuppa! But I still wanted to use the word 'Coconut' - so I put 2 and 2 together and got... 'Cuppanut'!
It sounds like 'Coconut' (same number of syllables) and begs the question; 'Are you a Cuppa Nut'?!
Next up was the Logo.
I loved the strapline that Vita Coco (coconut water) uses - "It's like sticking a straw into a coconut" - I wanted similar imagery of cracking open a coconut and drinking it...
So I came up with this sketch:
I wanted it to look like half a coconut with the handle of a china cup attached to it. Portraying the image that you're drinking directly from a coconut - And of course this is reflected in the ingredients, as 90% (or thereabouts) of the tea's ingredients is just pure desiccated coconut!
I then got my designer to put together a mock up of my sketch on the computer... I LOVED IT! And that's pretty much the version that is used today on our boxes.
